Staying resilient during tough times

2020 has certainly been a year that has put many people and their mental health to the test. It has been tough. Lack of certainty, separated from family and friends, fear around jobs – we can not deny it has been one heck of a tough year and  we have no real end in sight!

So how do we stay resilient and get through it? I have pulled together some of the things that have helped me to stay resilient and keep going through 2020:

  • Openly speaking to friends and family about how you are feeling. Yes it is scary for different reasons. But being honest on those hard days and asking for help, can lift the burden. You don’t have to trudge through this alone!

 

  • Taking rest days. Making sure when you feel the wave of mental exhaustion hit, you rest. Mental exhaustion caused from anxiety is overwhelming.  This idea that we have to keep pushing, quite frankly is outdated. Stop, rest, and start again.

 

  • Take a break from social media! Yes that’s right. There is a lot of negativity and scare mongering present on social media. Different “facts” being shared from different sources. It can be negative. So take a step back from social media. Take regular breaks, and choose carefully who you follow and listen to.

 

  • Get regular exercise – this doesn’t mean hours in the gym. This can be as simple as a 30 minute walk, a quick home workout, a little jog – whatever brings you joy!. Exercise does help with mental health. It is a great way to re-connect with yourself, and remove yourself away from the stresses around.

 

  • Find things you enjoy doing – and do more of it! Making time for yourself, is so important. You can not give from an empty glass. You have to come first, and looking after you has to be priority! Whether it is watching a good movie, reading a good book, having a glass of wine – if it feels good to you – do more of it!

 

Being resilient doesn’t mean we don’t feel the stresses of what is happening. Being resilient means we feel, we experience, but we find the strength to take another step forward.

We are all in this together. Be kind – and that starts with you.
